Description

The effects of friction stir welding (FSW) parameters and tool geometry on the forces and torques generated during the FSW of four aluminium alloys were studied. The alloys were 6082-T6 (6.45 mm), 5083-H111 (6.55 mm), 2014-T6 (5.9 mm) and 7075-T7351 (6.5 mm). Four tool geometries, varying in shoulder diameter (20 or 25 mm), centre pin diameter (8-10 mm) and pin length (5.6-6.15 mm), were used. The forces developed during FSW were measured using a Kistler 9124A rotating dynamometer. The effects of dwell time, plunge depth, and rotation speed were examined. The downward force experienced by the tool increased with plunge depth. The horizontal force increased with transverse speed. The torque increased with the rotation speed of the tool.
