Description
The effects of friction stir welding (FSW) on the corrosion resistance of aluminium alloys 2014A and 7075, both welded in the peak aged T651 condition, were studied. The effects of postweld heat treatment (retrogression and reageing treatment) were examined in alloy 7075. The plate thicknesses of 2014A and 7075 were 6 and 6.35 mm, respectively. Exfoliation corrosion tests were conducted after natural ageing for 6 months. Stress corrosion cracking susceptibility tests and tensile tests. Fractured specimens were subjected to fractography using a SEM. Metallographic sections were examined by light microscopy. FSW joints in alloy 7075, but not 2014A, were susceptible to stress corrosion cracking.
