Description

The effects of pre and post weld heat treatments on the strength, fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation of welds made by friction stir welding (FSW) in aluminium alloy 6013-T6 sheet material, which may replace the 2024-T3 skin alloy for fuselage structures in commercial aircraft, were studied. The following heat treatments were used: FSW in T6 and post-weld natural ageing, FSW in T4 and post-weld heat treatment to T6, and FSW in T6 and re-ageing to T6. Microstructure was examined by optical microscopy. Vickers hardness and tensile properties were determined. Fatigue crack propagation and stable crack growth under monotonic increasing load were characterised. Crack propagation was monitored through the potential drop technique.
