Description
The microstructure and mechanical properties of double-sided welds made by friction stir welding (FSW) in aluminium alloy AA-5083 were investigated as part of research into the use of the alloy in vessels for storing liquid hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures. The results for FSW were compared with those obtained using high-current MIG welding. The microstructure of the friction stir welds was examined using optical microscopy and EPMA analysis. Tensile strength, Charpy impact and fracture toughness tests were conducted. The mechanical properties were evaluated at temperatures between 4 K and ambient temperature. FSW was considered an excellent welding method for improving the mechanical properties of AA-5083 for liquid hydrogen vessels.
