Description

The application of friction stir welding (FSW) to the fabrication of copper backing plates of thickness 6 mm was investigated. The welding conditions, FSW machine development, and mechanical and metallurgical properties of friction stir welded joints were examined. FSW was operated in air at a spindle speed of 1300 rpm and traverse rates of 170 mm/min with a tool with 4 mm pin length. The microstructure of the weld nugget was examined by optical microscopy and X-ray CT (computed tomography). Tensile tests and hardness tests were performed. The design of the FSW machine is described. Oxygen free copper plates were successfully joined by FSW.
