Description

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of welding conditions on weld macrostructure and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the nugget zone in welds in AA-7010 aluminium alloy made by friction stir welding (FSW). FSW was carried out on AA-7010-T7651 plates of thickness 6.35 mm (0.25 in). Travel speeds and spindle speeds were varied. Weld macrostructure was examined. Samples taken from the nugget zone were used to determine hardness profile, tensile properties and microstructure. Grain sizes and volume fractions of second phase particles in the nugget zone were determined. The effects of welding conditions, and hence heat input, on mechanical properties, microstructure and grain stability are discussed.
