Description
The plastic flow and microstructure of friction stir welded butt joints in aluminium alloy 7050-T7451 (Al, 6.2%Zn, 2.2%Mg, 2.3%Cu, 0.01%Zr) of thickness 7 mm were investigated. Cylindrical compression test samples (5.1 mm diameter and height) machined from the weld zone, the thermomechanically affected zone, the HAZ and the parent material were subjected to constant compressive strain loading at 400 deg.C, and the associated stresses measured. The microstructures before and after deformation were studied using optical microscopy and TEM.
