Description

Friction stir welded joints, produced in an extruded profile of aluminium alloy 6082-T6 using run on and run off plates, were evaluated by measurement of mechanical properties. Plate of 6 mm thickness was welded using a range of process parameters, with gaps of 0.0, 0.15 and 0.30 mm between the workpiece and the run on and run off plates. Samples of 4 mm width were cut from 3, 6 and 9 mm from the edge of the workpiece, and subjected to tensile and bend testing. The influence of material flow on the mechanical properties is discussed.
