Description
Friction stir welded joints in aluminium alloy 6061-T6 sheet were produced using a robot arm, to assess the ability of the arm to withstand the mechanical stresses associated with friction stir welding. The arm was fitted with an electrically powered welding tool (subsequently hydraulic power), and machine vibration and tool deflection determined whilst welding lap joints in 2 mm sheet. Force control was implemented to compensate for lack of machine stiffness. Welds were produced in 2 mm sheet with two- and three-dimensional contours. Tailored blanks were also produced by joining 1 mm sheet to 2 mm sheet, in aluminium alloys 6061-T6, 5754-O and 6111-T4.
