Description
An instrumented constrained Charpy test was used to measure the fracture toughness of friction stir welded joints produced using several designs of welding tool in sheet aluminium alloys 6082 (4.7 mm) and 7108 (3.2, 5.0 mm). This test constrained plastic deformation by the use of deep side grooves, so minimising the influence of plastic deformation on the measured weld fracture toughness. Samples were taken from different positions relative to the weld, and tested at impact speeds of 3 m/s and 10 m/s, before and after fatigue notch extension. The initiation fracture toughness was calculated according to linear elastic fracture mechanics.
