Description
The application of friction stir welding to the construction of airframe structures of precipitation-hardened aluminium alloys, using butt, lap and T-joints, is described. A landing gear strut door was manufactured by welding an Alclad 7075-T6 skin to machined 7075-T7351. The three dimensional weld profile required the use of a 5-axis machine with a force actuator to control the applied axial load. Lap and T-joints were friction stir welded to produce a sandwich structure rudder fairing in aluminium alloy 7050-T7451. Also discussed is the heat treatment of 7xxx aluminium alloys to enhance mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, and the welding of thick sections (50 mm) as an alternative to machining structural components from plate stock.
