Description
The use of friction stir welding in aircraft manufacture, particularly the Airbus, both as an alternative to riveting and for the production of tailored blanks, is discussed. Potential benefits include cost and weight reduction. The European aircraft industry has initiated research programmes to study the technology of this welding process, and to produce panels for structural testing. Joints which may be welded include longitudinal and circumferential joints in the fuselage. Welded tailored blanks may be used for the reinforcement of cut-outs (e.g. doors), to replace chemically milled sections.
