Description
Friction stir welding developments, equipment, and applications for the joining of aluminium alloys, particularly for automotive applications, are reviewed. Body in white automotive applications include aluminium alloy tailor welded blanks and the manufacture of low volume specialist vehicles. The joint properties may be optimised by postweld heat treatment. Other applications include the manufacture of hollow panels for rolling stock and commercial vehicles, the production of single sheet panels with stiffeners, the joining of sheets prior to explosive forming, and the production of fuel tanks. A range of welding equipment for both linear and three-dimensional joints is available.
