Description

Guidance notes devised for Lloyd's Register of Shipping surveyors for use in the quality assurance of friction stir welded aluminium alloys are presented. The notes cover: welding equipment, materials welded, and welding requirements (weld qualification, production, quality control). Qualification procedures are based upon those for fusion welds. Welds are produced in accordance with a welding procedure specification, the details being recorded on a procedure qualification record, and the welds tested according to BS EN 288 Part 4. Production follows qualification of the welding procedures, with emphasis on material thickness, machine parameters and production testing as part of the quality control procedures.
