Description

Finite element analysis was used to model the friction stir welding process in 6061-T6 aluminium alloy plate, to predict temperature, residual stress and distortion. Temperature distributions in the workpiece were determined as a function of time, considering the tool as a moving heat source. Residual stresses and distortion were determined from the temperature distributions, including allowances for the temperature-induced changes in the alloy condition. The model predictions were compared with temperature measurements in plate of 6.4 mm (0.25 in) thickness.
