Description

The use of friction stir welding, as an alternative to bolted or riveted joints, for the assembly of Airbus wings is discussed. Issues considered include: cost reduction, weight reduction, joint quality, and enhanced in-service performance. Potential applications include: joining wing skin panels, replacing bolted scarf joints, and the production of wing skin panel grow-outs. Lifetime, inspection and repair implications are evaluated. Tensile and fatigue tests were conducted on welded 2024-T351 aluminium alloy joints.
