Description
Full field displacement measurement with digital image correlation was used to study the mechanical properties of friction stir welded joints in aluminium alloy plates. Welds were made in 5454-O and 5454-H sheet of 3.9 mm thickness, and 2195-T8 plate of 8.1 mm thickness, using a range of process parameters. A high contrast pattern was applied to the surface of transverse tensile samples, and the relative displacements of the pattern elements with increasing tensile stress was recorded by digital photography. Analysis of the photographic images gave strain measurements at known stresses for the weld, HAZ and parent metal.
