Description

The effects of friction stir welding process parameters (tool rotation speed and travel speed) on defects and mechanical properties in welds in aluminium alloys were investigated. Microstructural, macrostructural and mechanical properties of the welded joints were determined. Aluminium alloys used were 2024-T6 (Al, 3.92%Cu), 5083-O (Al, 4.63%Mg) and 7075-T6 (Al, 5.41%Zn, 2.11%Mg) in the form of sheet, 100 x 200 mm, thickness 4 mm. Details of experimental procedure are given, together with test results, including welding conditions, peak temperature of welds during welding, results of visual and x-ray inspection of weld defects, and tensile test results. Results obtained and optimum welding conditions are discussed.
