Description
Friction stir welds were made in Al-Li 2195 aluminium alloy plate, 2195 plate was welded to 2219 aluminium alloy forgings, and the welds were characterised by studies of mechanical properties, microstructure and NDE. Welds were made in plate of 8.1 mm and 16.5 mm thickness, and 2195 alloy plate was welded to 2219 forgings of 8.1 mm and 16.5 mm thickness. Simulated repairs were made in 2195 alloy plate. Mechanical properties were measured at room and cryogenic temperatures, and fracture toughness was determined using the surface crack tension method. All joints were subjected to NDE testing. Simulated joints were also subjected to photoelastic studies.
