Description
Friction stir welding (FSW) was applied to the 10 mm thick plate for the Fe-Mn-Si (FMS) alloy using a polycrystalline cubic born nitride (pcBN) tool. The sound FSW joint was obtained without macro-defects although small pores were slightly distributed along the boundary of the stir zone on the advancing side owing to the pcBN tool wear during FSW. The microstructure in the stir zone consisted of full austenite phase. The grain refinement occurred in the stir zone owing to the sever deformation during FSW. The stir
zone of FSW joint under the low heat input condition (125 rpm) showed the higher tensile strength of 759 MPa and the relatively high total elongation of 66% compared to the base metal and the fusion zone of welded joint.
