Description
Fusion devices include plasma facing components consisting of copper-based heatsinks embedded with cooling channels to handle the high operational heat loads. Stationary shoulder friction stir channelling (SSFSC), trademarked as Coreflow®, is a novel sub-surface machining process which is currently being developed as an alternative manufacturing method for producing these embedded channels for fusion energy applications. SSFSC is able to create embedded channels in a single process step and produce more complex channel geometries, such as serpentines, as well as channels within curved surfaces.
