Description

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining method, being well-known to be suitable particularly in joining of aluminum in all alloy and manufacturing forms. The technological advantages of FSW can be also expanded to high-strength steel materials, however, with significant challenges with respect to adequate tool durability to withstand the high forces and torques which are needed to manufacture high-quality friction stir welds. The objective of this research was to assess FSW as a potential disruptive technology for the fabrication of thickwalled steel pipelines in the offshore industry.
