Corner "Friction Stir Welding" technology is beneficial for T-joints in a variety of products, including aluminum aircraft. Although a stationary shoulder device and Corner Stationary Shoulder FSW (CSS-FSW) are promising technology to realize T-joints from inside, there were many challenges in welding actual products, such as the placement of the backing plate jigs. In consideration of these issues, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd (KHI) has developed the cutting-edge CSS-FSW, which has two spindles (dual heads).
