Description

Multi-material structure is effective way to achieve lightening of vehicles for reduction of CO2 emission. Thus, carbon fiber reinforced thermo-plastic (CFRTP) and aluminum alloy (Al) are useful materials for lightening of vehicles. For fabrication of multi-material structure, direct joining between CFRTP and aluminum is necessary for achieving high strength, long-term stability and high productivity of the structures. In this study, lap joining between CFRTP and Al were investigated by friction stirring with prominent micro structure (PMS) treatment. The PMS treatment fabricate porous protrusion structure with 100 μm on Al surface by laser cladding. The structure was plunge into the CFRTP by pressurized heating induced by friction stirring of Al, and fabricated the joint between CFRTP and Al. The joints were evaluated with tensile shear strength test and microstructure observation with SEM and synchrotron radiation CT.
