Description

With regard to the fabrication of hollow structures by the inversion friction stir welding (IV-FSW) technique, welded joints were fabricated in A-1050 and A-6061 aluminium alloy and SPCC steel sheets (thickness 2 mm) by IV-FSW and their surface appearance and cross-sectional macrostructure were examined. Welding was performed using a tool steel tool or a cemented carbide tool at a rotational speed of 300-1500 rpm or 200-400 rpm and a travel speed of 200-2000 mm/min or 15-50 mm/min for aluminium alloy or steel sheets, respectively. A circular notch was formed at the welding start position to increase the heat input. Preheating the workpiece was induced by increasing the rotational speed to 1200 rpm. The outer surface condition was found to be useful for various vehicles and aircraft with respect to air resistance and design.
