Description

In relation to the production of local metal matrix composites (MMCs) by friction stir processing (FSP), an investigation was undertaken into the influence of tool geometry and process parameters on the shape of the nugget zone and the assessment of inserted copper material distribution within the nugget. The process involved deposition of commercially pure copper powder into a ridge machined out of an AW 1050 aluminium plate (thickness 8 mm) and covering with another plate to yield a butt joint configuration. Two-run processing experiments were performed at a rotational speed of 1000 or 1500 rpm and probe length of 2-5 mm. The area and shape of the processed zone (nugget and thermomechanically affected zone) and the powder distribution in the nugget zone were examined by optical microscopy, SEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and computed tomography. FSP trials were also conducted with copper foils.
