Description
Vertical and angular truss extrusions made from 6082-T6 aluminium alloy (Al, 0.7-0.74%Mg, 1.04-1.14%Si, 0.53-0.54%Mn) were friction stir welded in a half-overlap configuration to fabricate panels for marine applications and their fatigue performance was compared with counterparts made by MIG welding. The cross-sectional microstructure of weldments was observed by optical microscopy. Mechanical properties were characterised by microhardness measurements and tensile tests. Axial stress-controlled fatigue tests were conducted on Amsler Vibrophore equipment using a sinusoidal force-time curve and a load ratio R of 0.5. The influence of minor hooks on welded joint integrity under fatigue loading was investigated. The relative fatigue performance of the weldments was evaluated against MIG welds in the same configuration, welded joints without hooks, butt joints and imitated butt joints, and the Eurocode 9 design curve.
