Description
Samples of AA 2219 aluminium alloy (Al, 5.8-6.8%Cu, 0.2-0.4%Mn) produced by electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3), a wire fed process for additive manufacturing, were joined by friction stir welding (FSW) and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the weldments were investigated. FSW was performed using a convex scrolled and threaded tool (diameter 25.4 mm) designed to optimise material flow and recirculation during welding. Optimum process parameters, determined by visual inspection and tensile testing of welded joints, were selected as a rotational speed of 1000 rpm, traverse speed of 127 mm/min and plunge depth of 5.207 mm. The microstructure of welded EBF3 specimens was observed by optical microscopy and compared with that of welded bulk 2219 alloys.
