Description
With regard to the need for in-process subsurface defect monitoring during friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminium alloys, an investigation is presented into a real-time force measurement system of process output to sense defect formation. Issues discussed include intermittent flow of materials during FSW and postulated mechanisms, the relationship between intermittent flow and defect formation, plotting resultant force with tool rotational position, tool runout and shear layer formation, the production of good and defective welded joints in 6061-T6 aluminium alloys, and defective welds in 2024-T3 and 3003-O alloys.
