Description
AA 6061-T651 aluminium alloy (Al, 0.81%Mg, 0.53%Si) plates (thickness 9.5 mm) were joined by friction stir welding (FSW) and the influence of FSW tool eccentricity on material flow and welded joint mechanical properties was investigated. Welding was performed at a tool rotational speed of 1120 rpm, plunge rate of 18 mm/min, tilt angle of 2.5 deg., travel speed of 45-90 mm/min and tool eccentricity of 0-0.4 mm. Butt joints were fabricated parallel to the rolling direction. Microstructure was observed by optical microscopy. Mechanical properties were characterised by Vickers hardness indentation measurements and tensile testing. Tendencies for tool eccentricity to enhance material flow and promote Vickers hardness softening in the stir zone are discussed.
