Description

Dissimilar lap joints between AlSi10MgMn aluminium alloy sheets (thickness 3 mm) and Al-Si coated Usibor 1500 22MnB5 hot stamped boron steel sheets (thickness 1.8 mm) were fabricated by friction stir spot welding (FSSW) under different processing conditions and their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. FSSW experiments were carried out using an MTS i-STIR-PDS machine at a rotational speed of 2000 rpm, plunge depth of 3.5 or 3.8 mm, dwell time of 1 or 3 s and a speed-to-depth or hybrid control method. A representative heat treatment was applied to the hot stamped boron steel sheets prior to welding. Joint microstructure was observed by optical microscopy. Mechanical properties were characterised by tensile shear tests and tool wear was studied by tool shortening measurements and optical macrographic examinations.
