Description
In relation to the potential of force control friction stir welding (FSW) to produce higher quality weldments, an investigation is presented into the integration of closed-loop force control onto milling machines using popular CNC control systems, force feedback mechanisms are described and some results from force control welding experiments are reported. The advantages of force control over position control are summarised. Force measurement methods and force sensor evaluation are outlined. Implementation of closed-loop force control on milling machines is considered for Fanuc CNC controllers and the Siemens CNC controller. A spindle mounted force control measurement apparatus is described. The retrofitting of controllers to existing milling machines is discussed for the Takumi Seiki mill and the Tree mill.
