Description
Friction stir welding (FSW) experiments were undertaken on Cr-containing carbon steels (0.22%C, 0.5%Mn, 0-4%Cr) and the influence of Cr content on joint microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. FSW was conducted at a tool rotational speed of 400 rpm and a travel speed of 150 mm/min. Microstructures were observed by optical microscopy and SEM. Mechanical properties were characterised by Vickers microhardness profile measurements and tensile tests under displacement control. Issues discussed include the evolution of microstructure from ferrite and pearlite to bainite for Cr addition over 2%, the relationship between elongation and stir zone nominal stress, and the strength-ductility balance.
