Description

A scanning nonlinear acoustic NDT method was employed to detect the presence of kissing bonds in a friction stir welded 2000 series aluminium alloy and experimental results were validated using coupons taken from the scan area and inspected by optical microscopy and SEM. The nonlinear pulse inversion technique involved the injection into the specimen of two discrete ultrasonic pulses, one the phase inverted version of the other, and the summation of the captured responses. An adjustable pitch-catch head system was employed to allow for varying plate thickness. A damage index was obtained to demonstrate the change of nonlinear response over the scan. Microcracks associated with kissing bonds were observed by optical microscopy and SEM.
