Description
The development of friction stir welding (FSW) technology for the Ariane 5 ME heavy launch vehicle project is illustrated with respect to the superior material properties of FSW within the parameter development and the manufacturing of circumferential welds and flange welds. Issues discussed include applications of FSW to the Ariane 5 ME upper stage bare tank, process parameters and related material properties (cross-sectional microstructure and tensile and yield strengths) for FSW of AA 2219-T87 aluminium alloys, the potential use of FSW for launcher applications, manufactured friction stir weld seams in the frame of the Ariane 5 ME bare tank incorporating circumferential welds between the skirt and the Y-ring (AA 2219-T851) and integration of AA 2219-T85x flanges into AA 2219-T87 lower dome segments, and technology application at Ariane 6.
