Description
An investigation was undertaken into the efficiency and cost effectiveness of two process chains for the production of an AW-70xx aluminium alloy telescopic beam for a crane boom (length 8 m, sheet thickness 4 mm), and a comparison between friction stir welding and MIG/MAG welding procedures was carried out. Trials were performed with different pin geometries on AW 7020-T6 and AW 7003-T5 as butt welds and AW 6082-T6 as overlap welds. The influence of weld seam volume and travel speed was studied with respect to friction power, electrical power consumption and wall plug efficiency. Gas consumption, clamping process and filler material were also rated.
