Description
A coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with Abaqus v.6.14 finite element software was employed to model the whole friction stir welding (FSW) process within one continuous model and results for temperature fields, surfaces, weld formation and process forces were obtained. The aluminium alloys considered were AA 5182-0 and AA 6061-T6 for which mechanical properties were gathered by performing tensile tests at process-oriented temperatures and strain rates using Gleeble systems. Process parameters were implemented with the help of a reference point on the tool's centre axis while traverse speed was realised by velocity constraints in the Eulerian volume. The resolution achieved facilitated simulation of the joining of two sheets into one and real tooling geometries as well as burr and internal void formation.
