Description
With regard to inconsistencies in the literature concerning the correlation between friction stir welding (FSW) process inputs and post weld process or material response, an investigation is presented into the primary variables (temperature, cooling rate and strain rate) governing post weld microstructure and properties. Issues discussed include tool temperature as a function of rotational speed at different travel speeds (50-250 mm/min) in 7075-T7351 aluminium alloys, the effects of primary variables on the post process microstructures in high strength low alloy steel, and the dependence of mechanical properties such as weld nugget hardness on post weld cooling rate.
