Description

In relation to the challenges involved in temperature data acquisition and transmission associated with rotation of the friction stir welding (FSW) tool, an investigation is presented into a wireless temperature monitoring system based on thermocouples and radiofrequency data transmission and into results obtained from FSW trials on aluminium alloy sheets (thickness 3 mm). K-type thermocouples were embedded into the FSW tool connected to a transmitter and a stationary receptor was used to register the temperature data sent by the rotating transmitter. Butt joints were fabricated in AA 2024-T3 and AA 6082-T6 alloys by FSW at a rotational speed of 500-1500 rpm, welding speed of 254 or 305 mm/min and axial force of 4.45-9.34 kN. Weldment quality was assessed by microstructural observations using optical microscopy, SEM and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The relationships between process parameters, processing temperatures and welded joint properties are discussed.
