Description

SiC particle reinforced 2124Al metal matrix composite (MMC) plates (thickness 8 mm) were joined by friction stir welding (FSW) and the relationship between process parameters, weld defect formation and joint mechanical properties was investigated. The MMC was fabricated by powder metallurgy using AA 2124 aerospace grade aluminium alloy as matrix and 25vol% ultrafine SiC particle reinforcement. Welding was performed with an MTS PDS-4 Intelligent Stir FSW machine at a traverse speed of 15-30 mm/min, rotational speed of 400 or 450 rpm and heat input of 830-1880 J/mm. Joint microstructure and defects (including tunnel defects) were observed by optical microscopy and X-ray radiography. Issues discussed include process conditions to achieve defect free welds, the effect of lateral offset on flaw elimination, the dependence of weld defect area on heat input, and the relation between heat input and forge force.
