Description
Experimental measurements and finite element modelling were undertaken to investigate the deposition of AA1050 commercially pure aluminium layers on AA 2024-T351 aluminium alloy substrates by friction surface cladding (FSC). Experiments were performed on a modified planer machine equipped with an in house FSC tool and a 13 kW electrical engine at a rotational speed of 250-1500 rpm. Temperature distribution during surfacing was measured by thermocouples. Specimens were characterised by microstructural observations and hardness testing after at least two weeks of ageing. A 3D thermal flow coupled finite element model was developed to analyse the influence of process parameters (such as tool rotational and translation speeds and deposited layer width) on heat generation and the normal force.
