Description

Friction stir welding (FSW) experiments were conducted on a variety of materials and grain structure development, material flow characteristics and crystallographic texture formation were examined by high-resolution electron backscatter diffraction. To investigate grain structure development during FSW, microstructural observations were performed in friction-stirred single crystal austenitic stainless steel. Material flow during FSW was studied by crystallographic texture observations in welded joints of materials with different crystal structures and stacking fault energies (e.g. aluminium alloys, austenitic steels, pure iron, magnesium alloys and titanium alloys). Issues discussed include the influence of welding temperature on grain structure and microstructure evolution associated with the continuous low angle boundary to high angle boundary transformation.
