Description

Friction stir welding experiments were conducted on plate specimens (thickness 6 mm) of AA 2219 aluminium alloys (Al, 6.48%Cu, 0.32%Mn) and the crystallographic texture and deformation behaviour of the weld zones (HAZ, thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and nugget) were investigated. Butt welds were fabricated at a welding speed of 180 mm/min and a rotational speed of 800 rpm. Microstructure was observed by optical microscopy and SEM equipped with an electron back scattering diffraction facility. Issues discussed include precipitate distribution in the weld zones, grain size refinement in the nugget, the Schmid factors of the slip systems in the texture components, severe deformation in the nugget and dynamic recovery in the TMAZ.
