Description
Friction stir welding (FSW) experiments were undertaken on single crystal and polycrystalline pure iron sheets (thickness 1.5 mm) as well as a polycrystalline carbon steel, and the microstructure, material flow characteristics and plastic deformation of the welded joints were investigated. FSW was conducted by stir-in-plate welding at a travel speed of 400 mm/min and a rotational speed of 400 rpm using a WC-based tool. Microstructure was observed by SEM with an electron back scattering diffraction facility. Issues discussed include the density of high angle random grain boundaries, the 111 fibre texture in the stir zone and the occurrence of turbulent metal flow with work hardening.
