Tensile-shear strength of friction stir lap Al-to-Ti alloy welds

Dissimilar joints between AA 6060-T5 aluminium alloy plates (thickness 6 mm) and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheets (thickness 2.5 mm) were fabricated by friction stir lap welding (FSLW) and the influence of interface microstructures on the value of maximum tensile-shear load over the width of the specimen was investigated. FSLW experiments were conducted by controlling the depth of pin penetration using a milling machine with tools made from H13 heat treated tool steel at a travel speed of 20 mm/min and a tool rotational speed of 1400 rpm. Microstructure and fracture surfaces were observed by SEM. Tensile-shear testing was performed at a crosshead displacement rate of 3 mm/min using a Tinus Olsen tensile machine. The role of thin interface layer formation in supporting a high shear load during tensile-shear testing is discussed.
