Description

Friction stir processing (FSP) was employed to fabricate oxide dispersion strengthened copper composites and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the materials were investigated in order to clarify the effect of process parameters on material flow. FSP experiments were conducted on Cu-a1 sheets (thickness 5 mm) into the surface of which symmetrical grooves were machined and filled with yttria (Y2O3) powder. Three or nine lap runs were carried out at an anticlockwise rotational speed of 500 rpm and advancing speed of 40 mm/min. Specimen microstructure was observed by optical microscopy, secondary electron or backscattered electron SEM, electron probe microanalysis and TEM. Mechanical properties were characterised by Vickers hardness profile measurement as well as tensile tests on microspecimens sampled in the nugget.
