Description
A project to introduce friction stir welding for aluminium shipbuilding in Taiwan is described. The advantages of FSW compared with arc welding for this application are summarised. Stages of the project are outlined, covering work with local tool fabricators and shipyards, training programme delivery, design and construction of welding equipment and fixtures, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, installation in shipyards followed by demonstration of the capabilities of the FSW process to weld panels and extrusions, and DNV approval.
