Description
Butt joints were fabricated in a Ruuki Optim 700 MC Plus microalloyed low carbon high strength complex phase steel (0.06%C, 1.79%Mn, 0.01%V, 0.08%Nb, 0.11%Ti) using one-sided and two-sided friction stir welding in order to investigate the differences in microstructure and mechanical properties between the two processes and to compare them with those in parent material and fusion welded joints. Welding was conducted using a Q60 composite tool comprising 60% polycrystalline cubic BN and 40% W-Re alloy. The first run was performed at a rotational speed of 300 rpm, the second at 300 or 200 rpm. Microstructure was observed by optical microscopy. Mechanical properties were characterised by Vickers hardness measurements and tensile testing. Transverse face and root bending tests were undertaken to evaluate the global efficiency of bending. The tensile property improvement exhibited by two-sided weldments is discussed.
