Description
An investigation was undertaken to examine the effect of adding aluminium to magnesium on the strength of dissimilar joints between steel and magnesium fabricated by friction stir welding. The materials studied were pure 3N magnesium, AZ31 (Mg, 2.9%Al, 1.05%Zn) and AZ61 (Mg, 5.8%Al, 0.85%Zn) magnesium alloys and low carbon steel plates. Welding experiments were performed at a welding speed of 100 mm/min and rotational speeds of 1000-1500 rpm. Microstructures, intermetallic compound formation and fracture surfaces were observed by optical microscopy, SEM, TEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Tensile tests were conducted perpendicular to the welding direction at a crosshead speed of 3.6 mm/min.
