Description
Dissimilar butt joints between A516 steel (0.15%C, 0.95%Mn, 0.03%Cr, 0.01%Ni, 0.29%Al) and Inconel 625 (Ni, 22.6%Cr, 9.4%Mo, 3.5%Nb) were fabricated by friction stir welding and recrystallisation and texture properties were investigated. Welding was performed at a tool rotational speed of 300 rpm, travel speed of 100 mm/min, axial offset of 1.63 mm and axial force of 30 kN. Optical microscopy, SEM and electron backscatter diffraction were used to examine the microstructures of parent material, intercritical HAZ, fine-grained HAZ, coarse-grained HAZ, stir zone and thermomechanically affected zone in the two alloys. Issues discussed include discontinuous and continuous dynamic recrystallisation mechanisms, grain boundary distributions and polo figures for weld zones.
